On group dynamics

Word of advice: when holding parties for people you sorta know, you have to make sure you are also inviting people they know.

That party he was trying to have was never going to happen. Those 700 facebook contacts probably don’t all know each other. Its simple group dynamics. Very few people are willing to take the risk and go to a party hosted by a guy they barely know, without an entourage or without assurance that they won’t get stuck in a corner talking to a random person making small talk and nobody to bail you out. Otherwise its like 8th grade all over again: full of awkwardness.

Another word of advice: pump it up. Talk to those people you know, make sure they come. Have them bring their friends (chances are they know you through facebook). Keep people interested. Make sure there’s a reason for them to come out.

And for the record, in my opinion that has shit-all to do with facebook. Same thing would have happened if you had sent a snail-mail invite to everyone you have on your cellphone list.
